Overview
In the 7th century B.C., Ephesus flourished under Lydian rule as a progressive city ahead of its time, granting equal opportunities to men and women—an ancient rarity. Birthplace of philosopher Heraclitus, it also captivated King Croesus (560–547 B.C.), who rebuilt the Temple of Artemis, honoring the goddess of wilderness, childbirth, and the hunt.
Archaeologists uncovered three earlier temples beneath Croesus’s version, but its fate turned tragic in 356 B.C. when Herostratus burned it down for fame. Undaunted, the Ephesians rebuilt it four times larger than the Parthenon, creating a marble marvel crowned one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Walk Ephesus’s storied streets, where philosophy, ambition, and resilience shaped history. Discover how ashes birthed immortality—and a legacy that still echoes today.
